Near hurricane conditions for sure!! My shoes were filling with water during this one. Give both teams credit (and the nutty parents) for even being out there. I'm not sure why they were. Having a goal 4 minutes into this one was nice. But, after 45 minutes, most of which was spent in the attacking zone, only being up by one at the half was troubling. I could envision some fluke goal being scored against us and ending up tied. Field conditions were probably the worst I've ever seen. It was terrible footing for the boys, but they had continuous pressure.
Finally about 15 minutes into the second half Zach made a nice run down the left, somehow was able to plant and cut across just inside the box and have his legs chopped out from under him. He jumped up grabbed the ball and put it on the penalty spot. I knew he wanted to take the PK, but, he deferred to Andres who calmly made it 2-0. Lots of handshakes and slaps on the back for the shooter and Zach after. A short time later, Zach floating in the middle picked up a clearing attempt and made a nice shot for his 4th goal of the season. The parents were ready to go at that point but the referee let play continue. Zach had another cutting run ending up going in alone on the keeper. Somehow the keeper grabbed Zach's leg and the ball. Unfortunately, Zach hurt his leg on the play and had to leave the game. Right after that, the power went out on the scoreboard, the school generator fired up and the referee decided to call it a day. THANKFULLY!!! And we all squeaked home!
As everyone left the field, I met a limping Zach at midfield extremely concerned. He let me know he was freezing, had just banged his shin very hard but he was fine.
