Monsoon the sequel - Today the weather was almost as bad as the Wednesday a few weeks back against Lawrence Academy. The wind was not gusting, but the rain sure did come down. We were all well prepared this time!! Evidently St. Paul's bus got lost on it's way down from NH. The game didn't start until 2:00 pm, so the boys had an extra half hour to warm up in the rain. When the game did start Brooks was a bit cold. While St. Paul wasn't exactly hot, they did break through first. The ball floated in the box, bounced around and then ended up in the Brooks net. With a post season tournament berth on the line no one expected this slow start. Over the next few minutes Brooks started to take control. Finally, Zach sent a beautiful ball over the top and between two defenders sending Nick in alone. Tie game!! A bit over 10 minutes later Zach made another beauty of a pass to his fellow Freshman Sam Milbury. Sam deposited that one for his first Brooks goal a 2-1 lead. The two freshmen had a very emphatic hug before being mobbed by the rest of the team.
Brooks continued to press hard and Nick got his second of the game with about 5 minutes left in the half. Nick did a very impressive belly slide celebration between the edge of the box and the corner after the goal. Hydroplaning at it's best!! The second half brought more pressure by Brooks. St. Paul's didn't have a shot on net until late in the half, but to their credit, they never gave up. They played hard right to the end. When the final whistle blew, the boys met at center - handshakes and hugs all around.
In what seemed like a special moment, Nick and Zach hugged, chatted for a brief moment, hugged again and then went on to other teammates. It was a bit funny as Zach lifted Nick off his feet when they hugged (he is a little taller than Nick). Hopefully the boys will earn a tournament berth with today's win and that won't be the final embrace of the season. Zach finished the regular season with 5 goals and 5 assists for 15 points. He remains the only freshman on the ISL leader board. http://islboyssoccer.sps.edu/stats.aspx. A very impressive freshman season for sure!!
